Street Talk : January 17, 2011

This year is the 25th anniversary of Martin Luther King Jr. Day being a national holiday. Do you think racial relations have improved in the past 25 years?

"Yeah. There has been improvement. I remember hearing rumblings of the KKK being around here, but I haven't heard anything like that in years."

_ Donna Steckline, Gilbertsville, chaplain.

"I would think so, especially since we are in a small area and it seems like everyone accepts everyone."

_ Yvette Cabrinety, Gilbertsville, guidance counselor.

"Oh yeah. I'm in my 60s now, and you don't even think of it anymore."

_ Don Davis, Gilbertsville, sales.

"Yes, definitely. Now we have a black president _ 25 years ago that wouldn't have been possible."

_ Manny Robertson, Morris, student.

"Some in the country, but around here, there still isn't very much diversity."

_ Lilly Lukeman, Morris, student.

"I think there has been over the past 25 years. So many more people are treated as equals now."

_ Matthew Sheldon, Morris, superintendent.
