Give us 'A Word of Advice'

Yup, it’s me again.

And, while I can offer advice to teens each month, I’m sure teens would rather hear from someone closer to their own age.

Teens better know what problems their peers are facing. And how I handled something when I was in school may not still be the best way to handle it today.

Divorce and drugs are ever-present problems for some. Peer pressure is still there, and so are relationship issues, but some things certainly are different. Bullying was an issue, but cyberbullying didn’t exist. Testing and college pressures were much less then, too.

So if your friends turn to you for advice on issues they face and you’d like to share your advice with our readers, we want to hear from you.

If you like to write, are in eighth through 11th grade in a school in Delaware, Otsego, Chenango or Schoharie county and would like to write a column every four weeks, submit “A Word of Advice” sample column of 600 to 800 words.

The columns should not be in a “Dear Abby” letter-writing format, but in a more conversational tone. You can tackle issues you or your friends have been confronted with, or you can take on issues you have seen around you.

Along with the column, you should include your name, age, hometown, grade, school and a phone number where we can reach you.

Samples can be sent by email to, by fax to 432-5707, or by mail, attention to Denielle Ziemba, to The Daily Star, P.O. Box 250, Oneonta, NY 13820.

The sample column may be used as the debut column.

If you have any questions, give me a call at (800) 721-1000, ext. 259.

If you are chosen to be the columnist, you’ll get paid. You won’t get rich, but you’ll have a few bucks in your pocket every month.

And, the position looks great on a college application.

So, teens, get writing.

I’ll need the sample column by Sept. 28. The first column will run Oct. 13.

Denielle Ziemba is Lifestyle editor of The Daily Star.
