Elizabeth Mathieu Rudy and Thomas James Acitelli were married Saturday, April 19, in New York City. The Rev. John P. Duffell, a friend of the couple, performed the Roman Catholic Nuptial Mass at the Convent of the Sacred Heart, the bride's preparatory school, on Manhattan's Upper East Side. A reception at the school followed the ceremony.

Among the attendees at the wedding was the bride's maternal grandmother, Margaret L. Mathieu of Newtown Square, Pa. The bride, as her mother before her, wore her grandmother's wedding dress at the ceremony.

The bride, 31, is keeping her name for professional purposes. She is a graduate curatorial intern in the department of French paintings at the National Gallery of Art in Washington, D.C. In September, she will be the Chester Dale Art History Fellow in the department of drawings at The Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York City. The bride graduated from Yale University with distinction, with dual majors in art history and French, and received master's and doctoral degrees in art history from Harvard University. The title of her doctoral dissertation is: "Pierre-Paul Prud'hon (1758-1823) and the Problem of Allegory."

Between college and graduate school, the bride served two years as a Peace Corps volunteer in the republic of Guinea in western Africa.

She is the daughter of John A. Rudy and Suzanne M. Rudy of Cooperstown and New York City. The bride's mother owns and operates Baseball Bed and Breakfast in Cooperstown.

The bridegroom, 31, is a senior editor at The New York Observer. He graduated from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill with dual majors in journalism and mass communication and in history. He received a master's degree in journalism from the Columbia University Graduate School of Journalism.

He is the son of Mario A. Acitelli and Joan S. Acitelli of Charlotte, N.C. The Acitellis originally were from western New York. They moved to Charlotte with their family 25 years ago as the result of an employment transfer. Many of their relatives continue to reside in the areas around Batavia and Rochester.

The couple met in May 2003 at a dinner party hosted by a mutual friend for Acitelli and some of his fellow Columbia University journalism master's degree recipients.

Following a honeymoon in Monaco, the couple will reside in Washington, D.C.
