Fire destroys vacant trailer
ONEONTA _ A fire early Saturday morning destroyed a vacant mobile home on Winney Hill Road in the town of Oneonta.
The blaze struck a trailer at 479 Winney Hill Road that had belonged to Oren G. Pomeroy, who died in July at the age of 96.
The mobile home was a total loss, according to the Oneonta Fire Department.
Firefighters were called at about 5:30 a.m. after the blaze was reported by neighbors, fire officials said.
The Oneonta Fire Department was assisted by firefighters from West Oneonta and Otego.
No injuries were reported.
The home was in the process of being sold by Pomeroy's family, according to a neighbor.
Burglars take copper piping
SIDNEY _ State police are investigating a series of residential burglaries during which thieves target copper piping.
The houses broken into were either abandoned, for sale or seasonal and have mostly been located near county Route 44, county Route 2 and state Route 357 in the towns of Unadilla and Sidney, according to Sidney troopers.
The thieves have been cutting all of the copper piping out of the homes, which have, in some cases, flooded, troopers said.
Residents are being asked to lock their homes and vehicles and report any suspicious activity.
Troopers are asking anyone with information to call them at 561-7400. All calls will remain confidential, troopers said.
Main St. work
ONEONTA _ Work will begin today on repaving Main Street between Chestnut Street and Elm Street.
Construction should be completed by Friday.
Main Street in this area will be closed to traffic from 7 a.m. to 5:30 p.m.
