{"HeadlineLight14"/}Baseball Hall to dedicate statue

The National Baseball Hall of Fame will welcome Boston Red Sox pitcher Curt Schilling and family members of Jackie Robinson and Roberto Clemente on Saturday, when the Cooperstown shrine celebrates its first Character and Courage Weekend.

The event includes the dedication of a statue depicting Hall of Famers Clemente, Lou Gehrig and Robinson as symbols of character and courage in the Hall's lobby, where it will become a permanent fixture.

Schilling will join Rachel Robinson, Jackie's widow; Vera Clemente, Roberto's widow; Luis and Roberto Clemente Jr., Clemente's sons; and author Jonathan Eig in dedicating the statue at 1 p.m. Saturday.

Other Character and Courage events Saturday include the following:

Interactive learning stations, 10 a.m., 11 a.m. and noon; Sandlot Stories, 9:45 a.m., 10:45 a.m. and 11:45 a.m.; Voices of the Game in Grandstand Theater, 2 p.m. Event features Schilling, members of the Clemente family and Eig. Tickets are required and cost $10 for adults and $5 for children younger than age 12. To reserve tickets, call 607-547-0397; and book signing by Eig in Library Atrium, 3:30 p.m.

The Oneonta Boys and Girls Club on River Street will host the Oneonta Fast Pitch Softball Pitching Camp starting Sunday. The camp continues Nov. 9, 16 and 23. Session I is for advanced/intermediate pitchers ages 13-18 and runs from 1-2:15 p.m. each Sunday.

Session II also is for advanced/intermediate pitchers ages 13-18 and runs from 2:15-3:30 p.m. Session III is for beginners ages 8-12 and runs from 3:30-4:45 p.m.

{"HeadlineLight14"/}Charity bowling event Nov. 8

Phi Kappa Psi Fraternity and Sigma Sigma Sigma Sorority, both recognized greek organizations at Oneonta State, will host a philanthropy bowling event from 3:30-5:30 p.m. Nov. 8 at Holiday Lanes in Oneonta. Cost is $10 per person and covers three games and a pair of shoes. Each lane can have four-to-five bowlers. All proceeds will benefit the Boys and Girls Club of America and the Robbie Page Memorial Fund.

The Calcio Soccer Club is accepting registrations for its competitive travel teams. The girls Under-10, U12, U14 and U16 teams have openings.
