Bainbridge-Guilford/Afton senior Dustin Ross ran a 400-meter time Saturday at the Loucks Games in White Plains that likely hasn't been matched in this area for 25 years.

Ross crossed in 48.53 seconds to place fifth in what Bears coach Robb Munro said is the largest high school invitational in the nation.

Ross broke the school record of 49.06 he set at last season's state meet. That time was good for third among Division II runners at the state meet. Terrance Livingston of Great Neck South won in 47.70.

"We were pretty happy with that performance," Munro said of Ross' time, adding he thought it might be the fastest by a runner in The Daily Star's circluation area since Unatego graduate Darren Hall set the Section Four record of 46.99 in 1984.

Ross, Cooperstown graduate Joe Senchyshyn, Oneonta High graduate Geoff Bean and Cherry Valley-Springfield senior Brian Sutton are the only area runners to run sub-50 times in the 400 this decade.

Senchyshyn won the Class C-D state title in 48.56 in 2000.

Munro said Ross hit the 200 mark of the 400 in 23.3. Ross also split a 48.3 on B-G/A's 1,600 relay team, which ran a season-best 3:27.32. Josh Norris (51.8 split), Kyle Kelly (53.2) and Steve Howe (53.7) rounded out the team. Munro said their time is the fastest among D-II relay teams (school enrollments of 599 or fewer) in the state this season.

A day earlier, Ethan Whitney, Kyle Kelly, Russell Ross and Dustin Ross broke the school's 3,200 relay record. They crossed in 8:25.32 _ beating the old mark of 8:34.4 set in 1994. Russell Ross is Dustin's younger brother.

Munro also said B-G/A's distance-medley girls relay team of seventh-graders Nikiah Gaydorus and Isamarie Rams, senior Calli Gaydorus and classmate Morgan Glassett set a school record at the Yellowjacket Invitational at Oneonta High on Friday.

They crossed in 13:42.8, beating the old mark of 13:50.3.

B-G/A will host a four-team Midstate Athletic Conference meet Wednesday.

S-E Invitational

Cooperstown's boys, behind a pair of personal-best performances in the hurdle events by Alec Silvera, won the Sherburne-Earlville Invitational on Friday.

The Redskins had 131 points _ 38 better than runner-up Ilion in the nine-team meet.

Silvera won the 110-meter hurdles in 15.6 seconds and the 400 hurdles in 58.8.

Will Reis also ran a PR in winning the 800 in 2:02.6.

Brandon Lane won the high jump (6 feet) and Scott Millea placed first in the pole vault (12-0) for Cooperstown.

Perhaps the best performance by an area athlete was turned in by Edmeston's Jared Hamm, who tripled jumped 43 feet, 10.5 inches in winning by close to 5 feet. That mark is the longest in the area this season.

Walton's Adam Finch placed first in the shot put (45-1.5) and the discus (139-11).

Cooperstown senior Anna Weber also won both hurdle events, but the Redskins finished a point behind co-winners Norwich and Ilion in the girls team standings. Cooperstown had 96 points.

Weber won the 100 hurdles (16.2) and the 400 hurdles (1:09.8), and also placed second in the 100 (13.4).

Nichole Wischoff won the 3,000 for Cooperstown in a personal-best 11:52.5.

Walton's Molly Maguire won the 1,500 in 5:07 and Edmeston's Kori Hamm placed first in the triple jump (33-4.75).

Cooperstown will play host to Waterville and New York Mills on Tuesday and then has a re-scheduled meet Thursday at Mount Markham.
