ONEONTA _ Gov. Eliot Spitzer has announced the appointment of Joseph A. Bernier to the College Council of the State University College at Oneonta.
Bernier, community development director and engineering administrator for the city of Oneonta and chairman of the Otsego County industrial development agency, replaces Dennis Smith, whose term expired recently.
Bernier served previously on the council from 1987 to 1997.
The next College Council meeting was scheduled for Friday in the Craven Lounge of the Morris Conference Center on campus. On the agenda was a report on the college from President Alan Donovan, as well as updates on the presidential search and the college's strategic action plan for equity, diversity and inclusion.
Bernier, a longtime area resident and a 1972 SUCO graduate, has a master's degree in public administration from the Nelson A. Rockefeller School of Public Administration and Policy at SUNY Albany.
He has served as president and vice president of the Oneonta YMCA Board of Directors, and he continues to serve as president of the Academy Arms Housing Development Co. Bernier is a board member of the Southern Tier East Regional Planning and Development Board. He has also served on the boards of the Bugbee Memorial Foundation and the Otsego County Civil Service Employees Federal Credit Union.
He also is a committee member of the Ricky J. Parisian Pit Run Memorial Road Race.
Each state-operated campus in the SUNY system has a college council, which has specific statutory powers, such as naming buildings and making regulations regarding student conduct.
The members of each council are appointed by the governor with the exception of the student representative, who is elected by the student body.
