Empire 8 honors Hartwick DE
Delhi graduate Chad Rockefeller, a junior defensive end for Hartwick College, was named the Empire 8 Conference's Defensive Player of the Week.
Rockefeller made 4 1/2 sacks in the Hawks' come-from-behind, 28-27 victory at Salve Regina on Saturday. He finished with nine tackles, including four for losses. He also forced a fumble. Through two games, Rockefeller leads the Hawks in tackles for losses (5 1/2), is tied for the team lead in solo tackles (13), and is tied for second in total tackles (16).
Hartwick (2-0) plays host to Norwich at 1 p.m. Saturday.
O-State athletes of the week
Sophomore tennis player Elizabeth Flamman and sophomore men's soccer player Evan Jedynak were named Oneonta State's athletes of the week.
Flamman helped the Red Dragons to a 3-2 week overall and a 3-1 week in SUNY Athletic Conference play by going 4-1 in singles play and 3-1 in doubles.
Flamman is 5-1 in singles play and 5-1 in doubles play this fall. O-State (4-2) is 4-1 in conference.
Jedynak scored twice in Oneonta's 2-1 victory over William Paterson on Friday, helping the Red Dragons win the opening game of the 2009 Division III Mayor's Cup tournament.
The Red Dragons went on to defeat Western New England College, 3-1, on Saturday in the championship game to capture the Mayor's Cup title. Jedynak was named the Jim Lennox Offensive MVP of the tournament.
Jedynak also assisted on the winning goal in Oneonta's 2-1 overtime victory over Castleton last Monday.
Jedynak is second on the team in goals with five and tied for second in scoring with 13.
O-State is 5-0.
Cobleskill athlete of the week
Jefferson graduate Christine Bower, a freshman on the women's soccer team, was named SUNY Cobleskill's athlete of the week.
A defender, Bower scored two goals during the past week, including the eventual winner in the Fighting Tigers' 3-1 home victory over New York Maritime on Saturday. Bower also scored Wednesday in Cobleskill's 5-1 loss to Albany College of Pharmacy.
NEAC cross country athletes of the week
Sophomores Brian Kelly and Meghan LaPoint were named the North Eastern Athletic Conference male and female athletes of the week for cross country.
Kelly crossed in 29 minutes, 34 seconds over Cobleskill's 5.2-mile course to lead the Fighting Tigers to a fifth-place finish in their Steven A. Warde Invitational on Saturday. Kelly finished 20th.
LaPoint placed eighth, completing the 3.1-mile course in 19:27 and leading Cobleskill to a fifth-place finish.
Cobleskill travels to Bard College on Saturday for the Raptor Invitational.
