ONEONTA _ An elderly couple were seriously injured Thursday night in a collision with a cement truck on state Route 7 in Oneonta.

The accident, which occurred at about 6:20 p.m., was near Pizza Hut.

The couple were taken to A.O. Fox Memorial Hospital by Oneonta Fire Department ambulance. The 89-year-old driver, in critical condition, was flown to Albany Medical Center, while the 86-year-old female passenger, believed to be his wife, was in guarded condition in the intensive care unit at Fox, state police at Oneonta said. The Jaws of Life were used by the fire department to extract the couple, troopers said.

The names of the Otego residents weren't disclosed because family notification was pending.

The accident occurred when the driver failed to yield the right of way as he pulled out of the restaurant lot, troopers said.

The car was struck on the driver's side by an Otsego Ready Mix truck being driven by Christopher Lanfair, 35, of New Berlin, troopers said. He was in stable condition at Fox, troopers said.

The road where the accident took place was still closed at 9:45 p.m., troopers said.

The accident is under investigation.
