SCHENEVUS _ A fire in the town of Maryland on Thursday afternoon damaged a home on county Route 34, according to fire officials.

A blaze at 711 County Route 34 was reported by a neighbor at about 2 p.m., said Jody Sperbeck, an assistant fire chief for the Schenevus Fire Department.

The fire damaged a kitchen and there was smoke and water damage inside the home, he said.

No one was home at the time of the blaze, and no injuries were reported among firefighters who responded from several area departments.

The cause of the fire is still under investigation, but it is believed to have started in the basement, Sperbeck said.

Sperbeck said he did not have the names of the occupants.
