A local woman was declared dead after a two-vehicle head-on collision on state Route 28 in the town of Franklin, Delaware deputies said late Monday night.
The cause of death for Mary Depaolo, 57, of Franklin, and the accident were under investigation, Undersheriff Douglas Vredenburgh said at 10:30 p.m. Monday.
Vredenburgh said the preliminary investigation revealed that the 5:28 p.m. accident happened when Depaolo crossed over the center line into the on-coming lane and her Jeep Liberty collided with a Chevrolet Suburban driven by Dr. Michael Diaz, 43, of Oneonta.
A state police accident reconstruction team was investigating the collision to determine why Depaolo drove into the other lane, Vredenburgh said, and road conditions, including weather factors such as ice, were being considered.
The accident happened near the intersection with county Route 357, Vredenburg said. Depaolo was driving on Route 28 toward Franklin and Delhi, and Diaz was driving toward Oneonta.
Diaz, a physician at Bassett Healthcare, was taken to Mary Imogene Bassett Hospital at his request, Vredenburgh said, and Diaz's injuries included serious fractures but weren't life-threatening.
Dr. Richard Ucci, Delaware County medical examiner, was at the scene, the undersheriff said, and the highway was still closed at 10:30 p.m.
