MILFORD _ A Milford man was treated for exposure after he attempted to rescue his dog when it fell through the ice on Goodyear Lake on Sunday afternoon.

The 53-year-old resident of Happy Valley Road took a canoe out to get the dog, but the canoe filled with water about 50 feet from shore, state police at Oneonta said.

A neighbor, with the assistance of a trooper, threw a rope to the man, identified by state police as Robert Klein. A hovercraft from the Milford Fire Department brought him to shore, troopers said.

The fire department took Klein to Mary Imogene Bassett Hospital, where he was treated and released.

From his home Sunday night, Klein said he was doing well after spending about 25 minutes in the water. His dog was also rescued and was transported with him in the ambulance, he said.

"She's doing pretty good," said Klein, who lauded the efforts of those who helped him.

The incident occurred on a narrow portion of the lake, which is a dammed portion of the Susquehanna River.
