Brian Beckford and Michael Grimes scored 18 points apiece as Oneonta State beat Wheaton College (Mass.), 78-68, at the ECAC Holiday Festival at Lake Buena Vista Fla., on Tuesday.

The Red Dragons improved to 8-1 entering the holiday break.

Oneonta State led, 29-26, at halftime. Grimes, who also had eight rebounds, scored 10 of his 18 points after halftime. Beckford contributed seven rebounds.

The Red Dragons pulled away in the second half with a 13-1 run to take a 63-49 lead with 5 minutes, 56 seconds remaining.

Wheaton rallied to get within 71-66 on a three-pointer from Bruno Naylor, but O-State held on for the victory.

Troy Talbot scored 17 points off the bench for O-State, including 10 of 11 from the foul line.

Beckford and Talbot were also named Oneonta State's athletes of the week, the school announced Tuesday.

O-State's start is the first time in program history that the Red Dragons enter the holiday break with eight wins. It's the third time that O-State has won eight of its first nine games and the first since the 1996-97 season.

The Red Dragons visit Brockport on Jan. 8.
