Oneonta State's men and women each finished fifth in the eight-team SUNY Athletic Conference Track and Field Championships, which ran Friday and Saturday at O-State.

Both of the Red Dragons' 1,600-meter relay teams won titles, including a meet-record 3 minutes, 57.78 seconds from the women's team of Liz Maziejka, Lauren Brunetto, Kristen Stein and Janine Sacca.

Fred Romer, Sean Daly, Tim Greenberg (Oneonta High) and Eric Theiss crossed in 3:19.00 to lead O-State's 1,600 men's relay team.

Joe Sullivan contributed a first in the javelin for Oneonta's men, who finished with 95 points. Geneseo won with 171 and was followed by Cortland (154.5), Buffalo State (122) and Brockport (120).

Sullivan's winning throw covered 172 feet, 4 inches. Teammate Joe Reed finished second in the 100 (10.98), as did Mike DeVasto in the shot put (47-1.5). Theiss and Romer crossed second and fourth, respectively, in the 400. Theiss finished in 49.40 _ .08 ahead of Fromer.

The Red Dragons' women finished with 90 points. Brockport (176), Cortland (138), Geneseo (130.5) and Buffalo State (109.5) placed 1-4, respectively.

O-State received titles from Maziejka in the 400 hurdles (1:04.04), Brunetto in the 800 (2:16.59) and Sarah Timmons in the discus (126-7).

NJCAA R-III Championships

Chris Burke and Chris Mason placed first in two events apiece for SUNY Delhi's men, who won the NJCAA Region III Championships for the first time since 2005 on Friday and Saturday at Erie Community College.

The Broncos' women finished second, behind Mohawk Valley.

Burke won the 800 (1:59.95) and the 1,500 (4:17.78). Mason crossed first in the 5,000 (16:26.98) and the 10,000 (34:08.08).

Delhi's 3,200 relay team of Burke, Corey Clavet, Chris Babcock and Josh Schultheis placed first in 8:21.92.

Ethan Lennox won the 3,000 steeplechase (10:14.91) for Delhi, which finished with 174 points _ seven better than runners-up Alfred State and Mohawk Valley.

Mohawk Valley's women won with 213.75 points. Delhi had 144.

Daira Veloz led Delhi with first-place finishes in the 100 hurdles (16.20) and the 400 hurdles (1:08.66). She also had a second in the triple jump (34-7.75).

Delhi's 1,600 relay team of Emily Bilz (Laurens), Ann Ward (Oneonta High), Kate Cole and Jackie Hernandez won in 4:22.63.

Kim McKay also placed first for the Broncos, clearing 8-6.25 in the pole vault.

The Broncos will compete next in the NJCAA Division III Championships, which run Thursday through Saturday at Alfred State.

Hartwick College's season ended with an Empire 8 Conference semifinal loss to Ithaca on Saturday at Rochester.

The Hawks finished 8-9 for their most single-season victories since an 8-11 finish in 2004.

Sean Barr and Mike del Rosario teamed at third doubles for Hartwick's victory. They defeated Andrew Dunnick and Mike Muraco, 9-8 (7-5).

Barr fell, 3-6, 6-2, 6-2, to Daniel Wolk at fourth singles.

Ryan Myers' fifth home run of the season came with two out in the ninth inning Sunday to tie the score at 3, and the visiting Red Dragons scored four times in the 10th to win their season-finale.

Myers homered to left field on a 1-0 pitch.

In the 10th, Carmine Caputo and Myers each hit two-run singles. Pete Lindner hit a two-run homer that cleared the 375-foot sign in left-center to pull O-State to 3-2 in the fifth inning. It was Lindner's third homer of the season.

Dave Filak struck out eight in three hitless innings to get the victory. Corey Andresen followed with a scoreless 10th inning to secure the win.

The Red Dragons finished 27-12.

Athlete of the week

SUNY Cobleskill named junior baseball player Tristan Massalay-Ellis its athlete of the week Sunday.

Massalay-Ellis homered in the Fighting Tigers' season-ending, 6-3 loss to visiting Oswego on Tuesday. Massalay-Ellis batted .327 with two home runs and 18 RBIs for the Fighting Tigers, who finished 6-24.
