Gerry O'Donnell Invitational

As far as personal-best go, it doesn't get much bigger than Walton senior Adam Finch's performance in the discus Friday at the Gerry O'Donnell Invitational at Windsor.

Finch's winning and school-record throw of 156 feet, 10 inches added 10-9 to his previous best.

"He had a whole bunch (of throws) over 140," Walton coach Rich Michalski said of Finch, who easily topped Walton's school record of 149-11 set by Jeremy Petit in 1995. "That was a good release. We've been working on getting his release higher.

"In Division II, he might be the best kid around in Section Four," Michalski continued.

Delhi junior Marty Cole, who finished second to Finch in the discus (136-4.5), was nearly as impressive in winning the shot put. Cole put the shot 52-4, which is his personal best, and won by nearly 5 feet.

Finch and Cole helped their teams to respective fifth- and seventh-place finishes in the 14-team meet. Chenango Valley won the boys meet with 102 points _ 11 better than the host school. Delhi had 49, Walton had 37 and eighth-place Stamford had 34.

Senior Davionne Price of Delhi placed first in the 110 hurdles in a personal-best 15.81.

Two Walton athletes had second-place finishes _ Leon Nevins, who ran a personal-best 10:44.06 in the 3,000-meter steeplechase and Cody Reed, who ran a personal-best 53.48 in the 400.

Stamford's Gavin Boyle placed second in the long jump (18-11), third in the triple jump (38-6), and third in the 400 hurdles (1:01.30), all of which were personal-bests.

The Indians' Andy Hauser placed second in the triple jump (39-4).

On the girls side, Newark Valley won with 115 points _ 10 better than CV. Delhi finished seventh with 40, Stamford was eighth with 22 and Walton was 10th with 17.

Walton freshman Molly Maguire was a part of two school-record setting performances. She finished fourth in the 800 in 2:27.40, breaking the record of 2:28.05 she set earlier this season. She joined Lauren Schuppel, Kristine Reed and Emilia Mieleszko on Walton's 3,200 relay team, which finished third in 10:18.83 and broke the school record of 10:30.51 set last season.

Jean Viafore had the highest placing among area athletes, finishing second in the discus (99-3).

Third-place finishers were Delhi's Anushka Stupakoff finished in the long jump (15-6.5), teammate Maris Chytalo in the 200 (28.45), Stamford's Sommers Gaddis in the shot put (30-5.25), Delhi's Mackenzie Oliver in the discus (88-2.5), and Stamford's Emily Wenner in the 3,000 (11:53.34).
