ONEONTA _ City police are investigating the death of a 26-year-old woman found unresponsive Tuesday afternoon at the former Oasis Motel on Chestnut Street.
Police are examining the possibility that drugs were a factor in her death, Sgt. Doug Brenner said late Tuesday night.
"The possibility of an overdose has not been ruled out," Brenner said.
A man who may have tried to revive the woman was arrested by police as they arrived. He was charged with drug-related offences, Brenner said.
The woman, who was not identified by police, was found unresponsive in Room 253 at about 4:40 p.m., according to emergency-radio traffic.
Brenner said the woman did not live in that room but was known to be from the Oneonta area.
"She was found by other people living at the Oasis who attempted CPR," Brenner said.
When police arrived, he said, one of those people was driving away from the motel, which was recently renamed Motel 88. That man was stopped.
David L. Ronquillo, 36, of Sidney, was charged with appearing under the influence of drugs, driving while ability impaired and possession of a hypodermic needle.
Police were trying to determine what type of drugs Ronquillo was allegedly under the influence of, and they said they were working to execute a search warrant on the room late Tuesday night.
The woman's body was removed by Otsego County Coroner James Hurley, who was attempting to have an autopsy scheduled for as early as today, police said.
Ronquillo was being held at the Oneonta Public Safety Building on $500 bail pending arraignment today in Oneonta City Court.
