ONEONTA _ More than $50,000 was raised for two charities through a fundraiser by the Scarzafava & Basdekis law firm Wednesday.

There were two winners of the raffle drawing for a week's stay at the California wine country home of partner John Scarzafava during the wine tasting held at the Dietz Street law office. The original plans called for one winner.

When the name of Gary Jacobsen of Morris was called and he wasn't in attendance, Scarzafava said another winner, someone who was at the event, should be chosen to keep it exciting.

The second week will be going to Michael and Ellyn Getman of Oneonta.

Michael Getman, an Otsego County assistant district attorney and city of Oneonta prosecutor, said, "We've never won anything in our lives."

He attended because the event was for a good cause, he said.

The money raised will be divided between the Family Service Association and Opportunities For Otsego's Community Food Bank.

Ellyn Getman said she was excited to be a winner. It was too soon to say how the couple would use the prize, she said. While it includes airfare for two, up to six people can stay in the house.

When reached by phone, Jacobsen said he hadn't heard he was a winner. He bought the ticket at an Elk's Club clambake in the summer, he said, and didn't know how he would use his prize.

In discussing the event, Scarzafava said the amount raised was at least $5,000 more than he had hoped for. The exact total raised should be calculated today, he said.

The fundraiser netted $30,000 for the agencies last year. Scarzafava said that the addition of the raffle to the events, which included a silent auction, was a big factor in the increase.
