EAST MEREDITH _ The West Kortright Centre will present an evening of New Orleans blues with the Joe Krown Trio at 8 p.m. today.
This trio features Joe Krown on Hammond B3 organ, Walter "Wolfman" Washington on guitar and vocals, and Russell Batiste Jr. on drums and backup vocals. In 2007, the three formed a trio that still performs weekly gigs at the New Orleans nightclub the Maple Leaf Bar, releasing their debut CD "Live at the Maple Leaf" in 2008.
Krown held the keyboard chair with Clarence "Gatemouth" Brown & Gate's Express from 1992 until Gatemouth's death in the fall of 2005, and is featured on the albums "The Man, Gate Swings," "American Music, Texas Style" and, most recently, "Back to Bogalusa." From 1996 to 2001, he held the Traditional Piano Night slot at the Maple Leaf Bar. He released his debut solo, "Just the Piano ... Just the Blues" in 1998 and the follow-up CD, "New Orleans Piano Rolls" in 2003.
As a member of one of New Orleans's legendary musical families, Batiste plays multiple instruments and has been at the drum kit since the age of 4, presenter said. Batiste joined the Funky Meters in 1989 and has played with performers such as Harry Connick Jr., Champion Jack DuPree, Robbie Robertson and Maceo Parker.
Presenters said "Washington's guitar work and soulful vocals have helped define the Crescent City's unique musical hybrid of R&B, funk and the blues since he formed his first band in the 1970s." Born in 1943, Washington toured for many years backing vocalist Lee Dorsey, including appearances at Apollo Theater in Harlem.
