A Festival of Children's Authors and Illustrators will be held at the Cooperstown Elementary School from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday, April 5.
Children and parents can get a behind-the-scenes look into how ideas become books, told firsthand by children's authors and illustrators. Child-friendly workshops, which will include drawing demonstrations, creating original stories with the audience and question-and-answer sessions, will be held throughout the day. The festival also will feature food, crafts and a bookstore.
The festival will feature Marguerite Davol, Barbara McGrath, Amy Gordon, Marty Kelley, Bob Dacey, Debra Bandelin, Rachel Guido de Vries, Deborah Sorrentino and Cooperstown authors Enid Henkes, Bruce Markusen and Jeff Katz. Books by the featured authors and illustrators will be available for purchase and signing throughout the day.
Charlene and Jim Vrooman, owners of the 1805 Phinney House B&B, led a similar festival in New Hampshire before they moved to Cooperstown.
"We look forward to bringing this event to Cooperstown. It's a fun and educational intro into the joy of writing and drawing. It's great for kids as well as adults. What an experience for a child to meet the author and illustrators of some of their favorite books," Jim Vrooman said. The 1805 Phinney House B&B is the main sponsor of this event, which is also supported by the Cooperstown Parent Teacher Organization and the Friends of the Village Library.
Cooperstown Elementary School Reading Specialist Mary Tedesco said the festival is a great way to cap off the month-long Parents As Reading Partners program, or PARP. In conjunction with PARP and the festival, author Marguerite Davol will present workshops for the students at Cooperstown Elementary on Friday, April 4.
The Festival of Children's Authors and Illustrators is free and open to all. The Cooperstown Elementary School is located at 21 Walnut Street in Cooperstown.
