The Family Service Association announced its spring schedule for parenting groups and workshops. To register for any of these workshops or for more information, call FSA at 432-2870. Advance registration is required, as group sizes are limited. Parenting groups meet at the First United Methodist Church at 66 Chestnut St.
"Discipline is Not A Dirty Word" will be offered from 9:30 a.m. to noon each Thursday in March. The program discusses seven principles of discipline, including focusing on what children can do, giving children choices and protecting and preserving children's feelings.
"Kids in the Middle" will meet from 6 to 8 p.m. Wednesdays, March 26 and April 2, 9 and 23. The program looks at the issues of single parents, separated parents, caregivers, co-parenting and related issues.
"Parents, Kids and Stress," "Creativity" and "Summer Fun" are three workshops that will be offered from 9:30 a.m. to noon. "Parents, Kids and Stress" will be offered April 24, looking at why parents and their children feel stressed, how to deal with stress and how to turn stressful situations into fun times. "Creativity" will be offered May 1, looking at how parents can nurture a child's creativity. "Summer Fun" will be offered June 5, featuring discussions of what to do in the Oneonta area during summer vacations. Parents may register for one or more of these workshops.
"Parents Supporting Teens: Can We Talk?" will be offered from 6 to 8 p.m. Wednesday, May 7, or from 9:30 a.m. to noon Thursday, May 8. Parents may choose the time and date that is most convenient. Alicia Clifford of the Mothers and Babies Perinatal Network will lead these discussion workshops about developing better communication between parents and teens. Parents are asked to provide information about their "hot-button topics" at the time of registration. Child care and refreshments will be provided; limited help with transportation will be available.
"Winning the Chore Wars" will be offered from 6 to 8p.m. May 14, 21 and 28. Based on Lee Cantor's book of the same title, this workshop will offer creative and effective ways to get children involved in household jobs.
"Summer Safety" will be offered from 6 to 8 p.m. Wednesday, June 11, or from 9:30 a.m. to noon Thursday, June 12. The following week, "Safety Around the House" will be offered from 6 to 8 p.m. Wednesday, June 18, or 9:30 a.m. to noon Thursday, June 19. Parents may choose the time and date that is most convenient. City of Oneonta firefighter Dave Lincoln, also of the state Office of Fire Prevention and Control, will offer tips about keeping children safe during summer activities, and maintaining safety in the home.

The Family Service Association has a library of parenting books and videos. The library is open from 10 a.m. to noon Tuesdays.
