South Kortwright Central School will host a chicken barbecue and auction of pies and household items from 4 to 8 p.m.
Proceeds from the event will be donated to help with medical expenses of the nephew of a Hobart couple and son of a former village resident.
Robert Yamada is the 21-year-old son of John and ReneaYamada of Spokane, Wa. John and his brothers and sisters grew up in Hobart, where their father, George Yamada, worked at the Rich Chicken Hatchery. George and his wife, Suzie, have since moved to Spokane. Robert's aunt is Catherine Yamada Rappleyea, whose husband, Glenn, is a teacher at SKCS. Cathy, her brothers John, Jerry, and Greg and sisters, Linda and Patty, spent their childhood in Hobart, while their father worked for the Rich Chicken Hatchery.
On Aug. 13, Robert suffered an accident that fractured four vertebrae and damaged his spinal cord. He is now on a breathing machine at a hospital in Colorado.
Robert will be undergoing therapy when his condition allows it, and has been fitted to a wheelchair that is controlled by huffing or sipping into a tube, organizers said.
Tickets to the dinner are $8 for adults and $5 for children 12 and younger. Tickets for children 3 and younger are free. Tickets may be purchased at the door, or from Cathy Rappleyea, Mary Hendee or Ellen Burdick.
The auction of pies and household items will begin at 5 p.m., and a 50/50 raffle will also be held.
Donations of pies and household items are requested for the auction. Household items may be dropped off at the main office at school on Thursday and Friday. Baked goods may be dropped off after noon Saturday.
Checks for the dinner or auction should be made out to "Friends of Robert Yamada." Donations also may be made directly by sending a check made out to an account that has been set up in his name at the Inland Northwest Bank at 2905 E. 57th Ave., Spokane, WA 99223. Checks may also be made out to Catherine Rappleyea, c/o NBT Bank of Hobart, P. O. Box H, Hobart, N.Y. 13788, and earmarked "Friends of Robert Yamada."
