Hartwick College senior Amanda Thurston was named the winner of the 2019-20 Anna Sonder Prize for Poetry from the Academy of American Poets.

Thurston took home the top prize for her poem, “A Series of Spokes in a Wheel.” Honorable Mention was awarded to last year’s winner, Taylor P. Miller, for her poem “Revolutions Per Minute.”

According to a media release, this year’s Anna Sonder Prize competition, the 41st, attracted 62 poems from 17 Hartwick students. Judging this year’s competition were Assistant Professor of English Bradley J. Fest and Assistant Professor of English Tessa Yang.

Otto Sonder, late professor emeritus of sociology, endowed a prize in 1978 for the best poem written by a student at Hartwick College, to be awarded annually by the college under the auspices of the AAP in New York City. The prize honors the memory of Sonder’s mother, who died in 1978.

The college will recognize Thurston and Miller at the 2020 Honors Convocation ceremony on Wednesday, April 29. Their poems, which will also be published in the 2020 issue of the College literary magazine, Word of Mouth.

 

The first-ever employee awards ceremony was held recently at the Delaware County Sheriff’s Office in Delhi to, according to a media release, promote and reward staff members for their accomplishments and contributions.

The Exceptional Service Award was presented to Civil Officer Robert Mantzouratos, Corrections Officer Health Goff, Kitchen Director Brenda Hood, Sgt. Kim Smith, Deputy Tyler McAteer and Cpl. Eric Alexander.

Certificates of Commendation were awarded to Corrections Officers Mario Blinco, Paul Moore, Bryce Charles and Paul Hamilton.

The Civilian Employee of the Year Award went to Administrative Assistant Jessica Miller.

Alexander was also named Deputy Sheriff of the Year and Keenan Kelly was named Corrections Officer of the Year.

Delaware County Sheriff Craig S. DuMond noted that the awards program was also created to encourage employees to make a performance difference either individually or as part of a team.

More than 700 students wre awarded scholarships at SUNY Oneonta. The college’s scholarship funds total more than $60 million and are the result of contributions from donors, corporations and foundations.
