UNADILLA — The future of the village of Unadilla will be addressed at a Sept. 20 public hearing to discuss a 22-page comprehensive/master plan drawn up by the village planning board,

The hearing to solicit public comment on the proposal will be held at 6:30 p.m. at the Community House on Main Street. The report is available for review at the Unadilla Village Library and village clerk’s office.

The plan, submitted Aug. 1 by village planning board Chairwoman Nina Schwartz, addresses ways the village can protect its small-town historic nature and environment while encouraging economic and community development.

Mayor Duane Green said the village board will listen to comments at the hearing and, after taking another look at the proposal, will either approve it or send it back to the planning board for revisions. No decision is likely on the night of the hearing, Green said.

In his first public address since assuming the presidency of Hartwick College, Dr. Adolph G. Anderson last evening defined his role as an administrator who will be totally involved in all aspects of the institution — not in an autocratic sense — but “as a participating collaborator with the faculty, administration and students in promoting the growth of the college.”

President Anderson spoke in an Opening Convocation ceremony, attended by the campus community, in the Binder Physical Education Center.

“Hartwick today stands in beautiful conjunction with national trends in higher education. We are moving in new directions…make no mistake about it, this is a time of profound change in our society as well as in our colleges. It is our exciting challenge to make it a constructive change, both in our college and in our society.”

Continuing his charge, Dr. Anderson asked his audience to consider as the text of his message to them a statement from Herbert Read’s “Education Through Art.” “It is assumed then, that the general purpose of education is to foster the growth of what is individual in each human being, at the same time harmonizing the individuality thus educed with the organic unity of the social group to which the individual belongs.”
