Preferred Toastmasters will host a comedy speech competition, "Laughter is the best medicine," at 5 p.m. Tuesday at Golden Artist Colors, at 188 Bell Road in New Berlin. Members will give humorous speeches, which will be judged on various criteria. The winner will represent the Toastmasters Club at an area contest in October.

How effectively each speaker creates excitement, suspense or surprise will be one of the criteria used by judges. Originality of ideas, audience response, speech structure, word selection, body language, vocal variety and enthusiasm will also be evaluated. The original speeches will last five to seven minutes each.

The event is free and open to the public. The humor will be suitable for families, according to organizers. Refreshments will be provided after the speeches, along with a demonstration of Toastmasters communication training.

Meetings of Preferred Toastmasters are open to the public and provide mutual support for developing communication and leadership skills. The club meets on the first and third Wednesday of the month at noon at Preferred Mutual Insurance Co. in New Berlin.
