Delhi family shares agriculture expertise

For the Mignier family of Delhi, everything is coming up roses.

The Migniers, owners of Green Thumb Greenhouses at 265 Main St. in Delhi, offer vegetable and bedding plants, annuals and perennials, organic soils and fertilizers, terrariums, organic insecticides, herbs, houseplants and seasonal garden decor. Aimee Mignier, 34, manages the business with her parents, Chris and Leslie.

“My parents bought the business in 1994 and I grew up in Delhi,” Aimee Mignier said. “We moved here when I was a toddler from North Carolina and my dad worked at SUNY Delhi as a welding professor, but he'd studied ag at LSU. My mom always worked in greenhouses and has her degree in horticulture, so I kind of got it from both of them. I followed in her footsteps though, because I got my degree from SUNY Cobleskill for plant sciences.”

Though Green Thumb Greenhouses is open year-round, Mignier said, the arrival of spring brings with it the business’ busiest season.

“Right now, we’re starting tons of seeds. It’s like the old saying, ‘make hay while the sun is shining,’” she said. “We’re getting ready for the time of year when we make most of our profits, but we’ve done it for so many years, it’s just a way of life now.”

“And all year long we have houseplants,” she said, noting a “huge collection” of on-trend succulents, air plants and tropical varieties.

Though a decades-old operation, Green Thumb’s Delhi home is relatively new.

“Our first season in Delhi was last spring,” Mignier said “Before that, the Green Thumb had been in Hamden since the ‘80s. But we had the opportunity to purchase this property, which has a vintage 1930s glass greenhouse, and it’s got a shop and we’re much closer to town.”

The relocation, Mignier said, has been a hit with customers.

“People seem to like it,” she said. “Before, it was hard for some people to get to Hamden, so we felt this was a more convenient location and it’s kind of a landmark in Delhi.”

The move, and Green Thumb’s longstanding reputation, Mignier said, has yielded a diverse clientele.

“It’s so broad,” she said. “We get elderly people, college students and high schoolers. Houseplants are really in right now, so it’s really all ages. Plus, on the weekends we get a lot of people from out of town and from the city. It’s a little bit of everyone.”

Calling Green Thumb “a must for that hometown feeling,” one online reviewer wrote, “They have the very best of flowers and veggie plants, priced right. (The) owners are friendly and helpful.”

As the business deepens its Delhi roots, Mignier said, she hopes to expand.

“We are going to be putting up another greenhouse this year and gradually expanding this location,” she said. “We just love horticulture and we love growing things.”

Through April, Green Thumb Greenhouses is open from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., Wednesday through Sunday. Beginning May 1, the business will be open from 9 to 6 daily.
