Earlville Opera House — at 18 E. Main St. in Earlville — will open its 2013 gallery season with its winter celebration of central New York artists from noon to 3 p.m. Saturday.
In the East Gallery will be “Transformer,” featuring mixed-media paintings by Christopher McEvoy. The work of McEvoy, an assistant art professor at SUNY Oswego, is “neither fully abstract nor representative,” a media release said, “his art and the act of painting document the struggle between our interior and exterior worlds, between the visceral and personal as related to physical existence.”
His received a Starr Scholar Fellowship to the Royal Academy of Art in London and done residences at Vermont Studio Center and the Ragdale Foundation.
Also on exhibit will be Henry J. Drexler’s acrylic paintings in “Rural Transformations” in the Arts Café Gallery.
According the release, self-taught artist Drexler has been painting details of rural life in central New York’s Chenango River Valley, the Adirondacks, Bucks County, Pa., and Middlebury, Vt., for more than 30 years.
“His canvasses are impressionistic landscapes that seem to simultaneously convey both the history and future of a place, as well as its essence at a particular point in time,” the release said.
In the West Gallery will be “The Opera Goes to College,” featuring artists from Cazenovia College. This is the first show of work by Cazenovia faculty artists in Earlville.
The event will include live music by Tumbleweed Gumbo. The group plays a mix of Cajun, Celtic and various flavors of American roots music. Musicians in the band are Liz Friedel on fiddle and vocals; Steve Blais on accordion, guitar, bodhran, ‘tit fer and rubboard; Larry Jordan on guitar and vocals; and Werner Koegst on stand-up bass.
