The Jasper String Quartet will be the first performance of the Honest Brook Music Festival’s 2019 summer season.
The quartet was formed at Oberlin Conservatory and began pursuing a professional career in 2006. In 2008 the Jaspers swept the competition circuit, winning the grand prize and the audience prize in the Plowman Chamber Music Competition, the grand prize at the Coleman Competition, first prize at Chamber Music Yellow Springs, and the silver medal at the 2008 and 2009 Fischoff Chamber Music Competitions. It was also the first ensemble honored with Yale School of Music’s Horatio Parker Memorial Prize. The quartet is the winner of the CMA Cleveland Quartet Award and is the Professional Quartet in Residence at Temple University’s Center for Gifted Young Musicians, as well as the founder and artistic director of Jasper Chamber Quartets, launched in 2016.
J Freivogel is the founding and first violinist. The second violin position is held by Grammy Award-winning Karen Kim. Sam Quintal is the founding violist, and Rachel Henderson Freivogel is its founding cellist.
The quartet has performed hundreds of outreach programs in schools. It has received two Picasso Project Grants from Public Citizens for Children and Youth. It was also recognized by the Fischoff National Chamber Music Association for its “outstanding and imaginative programming for children and youth in the U.S.”
The quartet will play at the Honest Brook Barn on Honest Brook Road near Meredith at 8 p.m. Saturday, July 13. Individual tickets are $25 or a subscription is available for $85 for all four concerts.
