The National Baseball Hall of Fame in Cooperstown will honor Roberto Alomar and Bert Blyleven during the 2011 Induction Ceremony, which is set for July 24 at the Clark Sports Center.

The Baseball Writers’ Association of America elected Alomar and Blyleven, Hall President Jeff Idelson announced on live television Wednesday afternoon.

Alomar, a 12-time All-Star shortstop who earned 10 Gold Gloves, appeared on 523 of the record 581 ballots cast for 90 percent of the vote in his second year of eligibility.

Blyleven, a right-handed pitcher who won 287 games, received 463 votes for 79.7 percent in his 14th year on the ballot. To earn election, players must receive at least 75 percent of the vote. Players who receive at least five percent of the BBWAA votes may be eligible for Hall consideration for up to 15 years.

Alomar and Blyleven will join executive Pat Gillick as the Class of 2011. The Hall’s Expansion Era Committee elected Gillick last month. The three newcomers bring the Hall’s membership to 295. A total of 205 Hall of Famers are former major-leaguers.

Former shortstop Barry Larkin finished third in the BBWAA voting at 62.1 percent (361 votes), followed by former pitcher Jack Morris at 53.5 percent (311). Other notable players who fell short were Jeff Bagwell (41.7 percent), Mark McGwire (19.8) and Rafael Palmeiro (11.0).

The Hall also will honor media-award winners Bill Conlin of the Philadelphia News (J.G. Taylor Spink) and Florida Marlins broadcaster Dave Van Horne (Ford C. Frick) during its 2011 Induction Weekend. Conlin and Van Horne will be recognized during a special ceremony July 23 at Doubleday Field.
