A defense attorney for accused murderer Ganesh “Remy” Ramsaran said Friday that the woman who has been romantically involved with the defendant and is considered a material witness in the case is convinced he did not kill his wife, Jennifer.

“Based on my conversation with her, Eileen does not believe that Remy was involved,” F. Stanton Ackerman, an Albany-based attorney, told The Daily Star.

Ackerman was referring to Eileen Barry Sayles, who, according to both Ackerman and the defendant himself, had an affair with Ramsaran, 38, last year.

In interviews with The Daily Star last January — interviews that were conducted about a month before the body of Jennifer Ramsaran was discovered off a remote road in rural Pharsalia — Ganesh Ramsaran identified Sayles as the woman with whom he had an affair.

He also confirmed the two were running partners. Sayles, he said then, had also been a close friend of Jennifer Ramsaran.

Ackerman said Sayles underwent rigorous questioning from police investigators during the search for Jennifer Ramsaran. She was also given a polygraph.

After the arrest of Remy Ramsaran two weeks ago on a charge of second-degree murder, Chenango County District Attorney Joseph McBride said there were no other suspects in the case.

When told of Ackerman’s statements Friday, the prosecutor shrugged off the comments.

“Mr. Ackerman is saying that the defendant’s girlfriend thinks he’s innocent?” he asked. “That’s his prerogative.”

Attempts to reach Sayles for comment were unsuccessful.

Ackerman said he believes Sayles will be a reliable witness if the case goes to trial.

“She’s very honest,” he said. “Regardless of the fact that she had an affair with him, she’s very reliable and very responsible, and she’s a person of integrity. And I think she firmly believes that Jennifer Ramsaran ran into some foul play and it had nothing to do with Remy.”

Ganesh Ramsaran remained held at Chenango County Correctional Facility Friday for lack of $500,000 bail set by Chenango County Judge Frank Revoir Jr.

In late January, Ganesh Ramsaran told The Daily Star that his wife was never aware of the fact he had a romantic involvement with Sayles. He also said the affair had no relevance to his wife’s disappearance.

In May 2012, Ganesh Ramsaran and Sayles participated in a road race in Binghamton in an effort to raise donations for the Epilepsy Association of Greater Rochester, according to a posting on Crowdrise.com, an online fundraising site.

While authorities have confirmed that an autopsy performed by the Onondaga County medical examiner’s office determined Jennifer Ramsaran’s death was a homicide, they have not commented on how they believe she was murdered.

When Ganesh Ramsaran reported his wife missing Dec. 11, he told police she was headed that day to a Syracuse mall for Christmas shopping while the couple’s three children were in school. Ganesh Ramsaran has said he worked out at the Norwich YMCA on the day his wife vanished. The children are now staying with their mother’s relatives, according to acquaintances of the family.
