As part of a national BISSELL Pet Foundation event, the Chenango SPCA will offer discounted $25 pet adoptions Friday, Dec. 13, and Saturday, Dec. 14, from noon to 5 p.m.
The Empty the Shelters — Holiday Hope event will include shelters in 22 states, according to a media release from the BISSELL Pet Foundation. The foundation will provide these shelters reimbursement for each pet adopted during the low-cost adoption period.
The regular adoption fee for a neutered or spayed dog is $155 and a neutered or spayed cat is $100. For unaltered dogs, the fee is $55 and for unaltered cats it is $40, according to the shelter's website. Costs for unaltered animals do not include surgery fees.
Though Empty the Shelters — Holiday Hope isn't for a few weeks, people can complete the pre-approval process for adoption right away to ensure they're ready by Dec. 13, Annette Clarke, Chenango SPCA executive director said. The screening process includes checking in with a potential adopter's references, veterinarian and landlord, if applicable, Clarke said.
Animals can't be reserved for $25 adoption before Dec. 13, Clarke said. This is to prevent people placing an animal "on hold" for reduced price adoption and then never showing up the day of the event, she said.
"This animal is then held away from someone else adopting it," Clarke said.
Independent of Empty the Shelters, the shelter is also accepting any monetary donation to adopt an animal through November, Clarke said. If the animal isn't spayed or neutered, the potential adopter must pay that fee, she said.
Potential adopters still need to be approved by the shelter and go through any other necessary steps to adopt an animal. Visit www.chenangospca.org/cspca-forms-and-applications/ for the application or pick one up at the shelter at 6160 county Rd. 32 in Norwich
"We want to make sure the animals don't just go to a home, but that they go to a home that's going to take care of them," Clarke said.
Unlike with the BISSELL Pet Foundation event, the Chenango SPCA doesn't get reimbursed for November adoptions, though the purpose is the same. Clarke said the Chenango SPCA has close to 200 animals at the moment: 180 cats and 11 or 12 dogs. Typically, the shelter is comfortable handling about 115 animals, she said.
"I think if we could adopt out 30 or 40 animals that would be great," she said.
Since its inception in 2016, BISSELL Pet Foundation's Empty the Shelters events have helped nearly 27,000 pets find homes, according to the release. Visit www.bissellpetfoundation.org/empty-the-shelters for participating shelters, hours of operation and adoption requirements.
