DELHI -- The ninth annual American Cancer Society Delaware County Relay For Life captains are gearing up for the April 29 and 30 event at the Delhi American Legion, Relay chairwoman Christina Viafore said Monday.
"I am very excited, and we are always looking for more teams," Viafore said.
The first team captains meeting for the 2011 relay will be at 6 p.m. Jan. 31 at the United Ministry Church on Courthouse Square at 46 Church St. in Delhi.
At the meeting the team captains will learn what relay is about and what happens at the event, share ideas for fundraisers, goals for the event and learn what the American Cancer Society can offer to local residents, Viafore said.
Some teams are already turning in money from fundraising events. The Country Cutting Gallery in Margaretville raised $25,000 last year and has turned in $6,000 from an annual skiing event that will go toward this year's total, Viafore said.
Viafore is encouraging local companies to help support the fight against cancer in their communities by becoming sponsors of Relay For Life. Many options for corporate sponsorship are available, including providing in-kind donations of goods, purchasing event sponsor signs for track display, encouraging employees to volunteer at events and collecting relay donations at places of business or forming a team to walk at the Relay For Life.
The Delaware County Relay For Life reached a $1 million milestone in April 2009 and then added another $144,022 following the 2010 annual event. This year the goal is $145,000, and the theme will be "More Birthdays," in keeping with the American Cancer Society's advertising campaign.
In Delaware County and nearly 5,100 other communities around the globe, Relay For Life unites people to celebrate the lives of those who have faced cancer, remember loved ones lost and fight back against the disease. Relay For Life events are held overnight as individuals and teams camp out at an athletic track, park or other gathering area, with the goal of keeping at least one team member on the track or pathway at all times throughout the evening. Teams do most fundraising before the event, but some teams also hold creative fundraisers at their campsites during the relay.
