Propane tanker crash in Hobart kills driver

Contributed by New York State Police A tanker carrying propane struck a utility pole and overturned at the intersection of Town Brook Road and Red Rock Road in Hobart on Wednesday.

State Police have identified the driver who died after a propane tanker truck crashed Wednesday.

According to a media release, Edward M. Walley Jr., 62, Delhi, drove off the roadway, into a ditch and struck a utility pole before rolling to its passenger side.  Troopers said Walley was not wearing a seatbelt at the time of the crash. 

Trooper said the crash might have been medically related. 

Police responded at about 1:18 p.m. to the scene on Town Brook Road at Red Rock Road in the town of Stamford, south of the village of Hobart, to a report of a propane truck in a ditch and on its passenger side. Officers from the Commercial Vehicle Enforcement Unit, State Police investigators, Department of Environmental Conservation,  and the Hobart and Stamford fire departments assisted at the scene. 

An autopsy is scheduled for later today.
