A Chenango County resident accused of engaging in a sexual relationship with a child under the age of 15 pleaded guilty and was sentenced last week at the Chenango County Courthouse.
Heaven L. Parrish, 20, of Smithville Flats, pleaded guilty Monday to second-degree attempted rape, according to acting Chenango County District Attorney Michael Ferrarese.
Parrish, a former teacher’s assistant at Oxford Academy, was fired in January after state police charged her with the statutory rape of a middle school student.
The incident did not occur on school grounds, but at the victim’s home, according to Ferrarese. The families of the two were longtime friends, he said, and Parrish was babysitting for the victim at the time of the incident.
She was initially charged with second-degree rape, second-degree criminal sexual act and two misdemeanor counts of endangering the welfare of a child.
Parrish was sentenced to six months in jail, ten years’ probation and will have to register as a sex offender, according to Ferrarese.
“It’s what the victim wanted. The victim did not want a state prison sentence for her,” he said. “It’s a fair disposition and a just disposition, given the wishes of the victim and the fact that she was only 19 at the time and had no prior criminal history.”
Parrish’s sex offender hearing is scheduled for June 14 at the Chenango County Courthouse, according to court officials.
