A community group seeking to buy the former Sidney Center Elementary School building is holding a fundraiser from 6 to 10 p.m. Saturday at Covered Bridge Gardens in Unadilla, an organizer said. The address for the event is 1532 Covered Bridge Road.
The Greater Maywood Rural Community Services Inc. was formed last summer in an effort to use the building that has been a vital part of the community for years, recently retired Rev. Paul Hamilton said. He is leading the effort.
Donations of all kinds are welcome, Hamilton said.
There will be Brooks House of Bar-B-Q's chicken, homemade desserts and musical entertainment. There will also be presentations about the new community center.
For more information or to make a donation, call Julie Byrnes at 369-9263 or Carol Bennett at 369-9293.
The building has been sitting empty for about five years since the school and one in Masonville, both in the Sidney Central School District, were closed because of declining enrollments. The students were brought to Sidney Elementary.
"We are working with the school and hope to take occupancy by early next year," Hamilton said.
Projects being discussed for the proposed center are senior citizen services, after-school tutoring, arts and theater.
Sidney Central School Board of Education President Nancy Parsons said the board would like to see the building used by the community, and members said they hope they are successful in completing the sale.
