Cabins at Gilbert Lake State Park will not be available for rent for at least a portion of the 2020 season as the park undergoes renovations and upgrades, according to the New York state Office of Parks, Recreation and Historic Preservation.
The Laurens park received a $1.6 million state grant in April to upgrade its sewage treatment facility, part of $110 million in capital funding included last year in the budget for 2020 to continue the NY Parks 2020 initiative to revitalize the state’s flagship parks and support critical infrastructure projects, according to a media release from the governor’s office.
The park’s 33 cabins were closed in the fall to prepare for the renovations, which are expected to begin soon, according to Guy C. Hulbert, public information coordinator for the parks office central region.
The septic lines in each cabin are prepared to be connected to the new system, the work for which will be contracted out, Hulbert said. An estimated completion date has not yet been determined, Hulbert said, but the renovations are expected to impact part of the 2020 camping season.
The park's website included a notice that the cabins would be unavailable for the 2020 season, but Hurlbert said that would not be the case. Bookings are not being taken yet because the completion date is not yet known, he said.**
Upgrades will also affect other sections of the park, according to Hulbert.
Use of the Hilltop* campground will be limited to Memorial Day through Labor Day, and the Deer Run campground will only be available from June 19 through Labor Day, with select campsites in both campgrounds closed for the season. The Briggs picnic shelter will be closed in May and June and after Labor Day.
“Although it will cause some inconvenience, the end result of the project will make for a better overall experience for our visitors,” Hulbert said.
