A town of Norwich resident is dead after fire struck her single-wide trailer on county Route 34 early Saturday morning, according to a media release from the City of Norwich Fire Department.
The department responded to a structure fire at 308 County Route 34 shortly after 3:30 a.m. Saturday in response to a 911 call. The structure was heavily involved in fire at the time of the firefighters' arrival, and firefighters found the trailer's owner, Mary DiDanato, 55, near the front door, according to the release.
DiDanato was pulled from the residence but was declared dead on the scene by the Deputy Chenango County Medical Examiner.
The cause of the fire is pending investigation by the Chenango County Bureau of Fire and the Chenango County Sheriff's Office. The fire appears to have started from a smoldering cigarette, but an electrical cause has not been ruled out. The Chenango County Bureau of Fire Cause and Origin Team is assisting the Sheriff's Office in the investigation. The South New Berlin Fire Department also responded for mutual aid.
An autopsy will be performed at Lourdes Hospital in Binghamton to determine the cause of death.
