One person is dead after a snowmobiling accident Friday in the town of Walton, according to state police.

Forty-six-year-old Walton resident Jeffrey M. Benson was pronounced dead at the scene when troopers responded to reports of a snowmobile falling through ice on a pond.

Benson was riding a snowmobile on private land off Chipmunk Hollow Road with another individual when he drove into a pond around 6:15 p.m., according to Aga Dembinska, Troop C public information officer.

Dembinska said Benson and the other rider crossed the pond once before when the ice started to crack. His riding partner rode to the nearest house to call 911 after unsuccessfully attempting to pull him out.

Personnel from the Walton Fire Department and emergency medical services found Benson unresponsive and submerged up to his neck. He was dead by the time troopers arrived, according to Dembinska.

State police said they do not know how long Benson was in the water, but investigators attributed his death to cardiac arrest and hypothermia.
