Two Oneonta girls were found safe at Southside Mall after being reported as missing Tuesday, Nov. 12.

The two 10-year-olds were reported missing Tuesday just before 3 p.m., according to an email alert from the city of Oneonta. A 3:30 p.m. email alert from the city said the girls were found safe.

Oneonta Police Chief Douglas Brenner said an OPD detective sergeant who was searching the mall was talking to security officers there when he spotted the girls walking around the mall.

The girls, who are friends, were apparently supposed to go to one of their houses but decided to go to the mall instead, Brenner said. The OPD is still looking into how the girls got to the mall, he said. The 10-year-olds were “fine” when they were found, Brenner said.

The whole search took about 30 to 40 minutes, Brenner said. Community members helped by responding with tips on the OPD’s Facebook post about the missing girls.

“It shows how good a community we live in,” Brenner said.
