A Chenango County couple was in jail Wednesday night after each was charged with first-degree reckless endangerment and endangering the welfare of a child after their 20-month old toddler had to be hospitalized for what proved to be a non-fatal drug overdose, according to New York State Police.
Troopers said Christopher L. Byrne, 32, and Casey M. Jones, 23, both of Coventry, were being held accountable for the child overdosing on pharmaceutical opiates at a Coventry home.
The child, police said, was taken for treatment Saturday first to Wilson Memorial Hospital in Binghamton before being transferred to SUNY Upstate Medical Center in Syracuse. The child was later released.
Police said the parents were also charged with criminal possession of a controlled substance and unlawful possession of marijuana as well as illegally growing marijuana. They were also charged with possessing a controlled substance outside its original container.
Police said Byrne was ordered held at Chenango County Jail in Norwich for lack of $15,000 bail.
Jones was kept at the jail when she was unable to post $10,000 bail, troopers said.
