A Plymouth resident wanted for assaulting his girlfriend’s children was arrested Wednesday at his home, according to the Chenango County Sheriff’s Office.
Vincent J. Guglielmo Jr., 38, was charged with second-degree assault, a felony, and misdemeanor charges of unlawful imprisonment, third-degree assault and endangering the welfare of a child, according to Lt. Christopher Gould.
Guglielmo’s girlfriend, 29-year-old Samantha D. Smith, also of Plymouth, was arrested Sept. 5 and charged with endangering the welfare of a child after a “concerned citizen” brought her 5-year-old son to UHS Chenango Memorial Hospital in Norwich, Gould said.
The boy was seriously bruised from head to toe and had marks on his arms consistent with tape, he said. Deputies tracked down the boy’s 4-year-old sister, who was treated for similar injuries.
Gould said the children had been “tied up, for lack of a better word.”
A search warrant obtained the next day for the couple’s shared residence yielded enough evidence to further charge Smith with second-degree assault, unlawful imprisonment and third-degree assault, according to Gould.
The abuse was “absolutely ongoing,” he said. “It certainly wasn’t a one-time thing.”
Guglielmo was also implicated in the abuse and a warrant was issued for his arrest when he could not be immediately located, Gould said.
“He was avoiding us,” Gould said. “He knew we were after him.”
Guglielmo is believed to have remained in the Plymouth area, Gould said, and was located Wednesday at his residence after deputies received a tip.
The children were turned over to Child Protective Services as the investigation continues, according to Gould.
Cash bail was set at $25,000 for Smith and $150,000 for Guglielmo, according to court officials. Both are being held at the Chenango County Correctional Facility as they await further court action.
