One man is dead and another is in jail after a Friday after a motorist hit a pedestrian near the Unadilla Valley Sports Center in Columbus, according to state police.

Jonathan M. Mayzak, 20, of Murrells Inlet, South Carolina, was struck by a vehicle while crossing state Route 8 near the Unadilla Motocross track around 8:53 p.m. 

He was transported by ambulance to St. Elizabeth’s Medical Center in Utica, where he was listed in critical condition before succumbing to his injuries Sunday afternoon. The Onondaga County Medical Examiner's Office will perform an autopsy, according to a media release.

Troopers arrested the driver, 31-year-old Edward D. Burnett of Utica, around 9:42 p.m. Friday. He was charged with second-degree vehicular assault and two counts of driving while ability impaired with a child 15 or younger as a passenger, according to the release.

Troopers said a 30-year-old female and two children, ages 8 and 4, were also in the vehicle.

Additional charges may be filed by the Chenango County District Attorney's Office after Norwich troopers and the state police Collision Reconstruction Unit conclude their investigation, according to the release.

Burnett was arraigned in the Columbus Town Court and sent to the Chenango County Jail in lieu of $100,000 cash bail or $200,000 bond.
