The Army band will play a free concert at SUNY Oneonta on Saturday, Aug. 17, to honor local veterans.

The 10th Mountain Division Band, a Watertown-based jazz ensemble, will take the stage in the Alumni Field House at 7:30 p.m. and perform military marches and music, according to Unadilla resident Gene Schmidt, who organized the event.

“It’s just another thing to do for veterans,” Schmidt said.

A Vietnam veteran himself, Schmidt previously coordinated a memorial for local Vietnam veterans at Neahwa Park, brought the travelling Vietnam Memorial Wall to the area and arranged a welcome party for Frank Romeo, a veteran who trekked across the state this spring to raise awareness of post-traumatic stress disorder.

“Let’s fill the Field House to honor our veterans,” Schmidt said.

Attendance is free, but tickets are required.
