State police said a Schoharie County woman was arrested on child abuse charges.

According to a media release, troopers from the Cobleskill station arrested Emily Bennett, 25, of Wright, on misdemeanor charges of third-degree assault and endangering the welfare of a child after receiving a referral from the New York State Child Abuse Hotline about a one-year-old child with unexplained bruising on their body.

The release said troopers and Schoharie County Child Protection Service conducted a joint investigation and Bennett was found to have caused substantial bruising to the child's buttocks. Police said the child’s primary caregivers cooperated in the investigation. The child received medical treatment
