Sanjay Gupta got it just right when he said our government has been misleading us about marijuana for 75 years. The lies are intentional and ongoing. The word itself is misleading. Prior to 1930s, the only people to use that word marijuana were a tribe of Indians of the Sonora Mexican desert. The rest of the English speaking world knew the plant as Indian hemp or cannabis.
If the Marijuana Tax Act had been presented to Congress as the Hemp Tax Act, it never would have been made illegal because hemp had always been part of America and people knew what it was and what it was not.
But politicians, government and vested interests changed all that with one lie after another until folks believed up was down and in was out. Various studies show that marijuana is not a gateway drug, yet many believe it is. Marijuana is in Schedule 1 of the Controlled Substances Act alongside heroin, of no medical use and highly addictive.
Meanwhile, the federal government continues to supply a handful of people 300 rolled cannabis cigarettes per month for medical conditions, 20 states allow for its medical use, it was part of the American Pharmacopiea for 80-plus years, and the federal government has taken out patents on cannabinoids as an anti-oxidant and neuro protectant.
Confused yet? Don’t be. Cannabis is the most studied substance ever. There is a wealth of information to be found. You need only look. Stay away from government websites because you will be misled and lied to. Is marijuana safer than alcohol? The 1,700 college students that die every year from alcohol would be alive today if they had recreated with cannabis instead. What if it were your child? What would you think then?
