Choosing Kennedy would be mistake
Up to now, Gov. Paterson has earned my respect. He has been a breath of fresh air. He has faced New Yorkers and told the truth.
As a SUNY employee, I am vitally concerned about funding for higher education. However, it has become obvious that New York, as a state, cannot continue to create and support an ever-growing bureaucracy. I am worried, however, that he may be falling into a political trap when it comes to appointing the replacement for Hillary Clinton.
C.K. Schlossberg is a wealthy East Coast celebrity whose greatest achievement has been serving as a member of the advisory committee suggesting vice presidential nominees for Barack Obama's presidential campaign. This experience does not qualify her to represent us in Washington.
She is a compassionate humanitarian, and uses her fame, influence and money to help worthy causes. She would do well to continue in that role.
If Gov. Paterson appoints her as a senator, New York will lose an opportunity to place a qualified representative in the U.S. Senate. There are, I am sure, many qualified candidates. We do not need another famous carpetbagger as our senator.
Project helps troops
Dog Tags for Kids is a not-for-profit organization that engraves dog tags for U.S. soldiers (both Moms and Dads) away from home, and/or in battle, to send to their kids. Often, our servicemen and women do not have much to send back to their children, and sometimes one of these dog tags is the last thing that their kids may get from them.
The organization, featured in a televised news story on the Fox News Channel, is legitimate. It is in dire need of support to keep continuing with the project. I have donated. I am asking others to find it in their hearts to donate, too.
Go to the website at www.dogtagsforkids.com and check it out. A donation of $25 pays for dog tags for 50 kids. Examples, stories, and contact information are also on the website. For every $5 donated, you will receive a dog tag of your own, unless, as I did, you tell them to keep it and send it on to a soldier.
I write this of my own free will. I have no affiliation with the Dog Tags for Kids organization. I just believe it can use our help.
The holidays may be over, but the American spirit of giving never ends. Please consider donating to such a worthy cause.
Elvis forever young
Happy Birthday, Elvis! Thursday, Jan. 8, was Elvis Presley's birthday. Had Elvis lived, he would have been 74 yesterday; and, somehow, I just can't picture Elvis as an old man! To me, he'll always be "forever young" _ just like his music.
God bless you, Elvis, wherever you are.
"May your heart always be joyful;
May your song always be sung.
And may you stay forever young."
_Bob Dylan: "Forever Young"
