Sports roundup

Three Bainbridge Guilford pitchers combined to throw a five inning no-hitter and the Bobcats beat Unadilla Valley, 22-0, at home on Monday.

Kori Thornton started the game for B-G. She threw two innings of hitless ball and struck out four opposing batters.

Thornton was replaced by Morgan Neidig in the third inning. Neidig faced three hitters, striking out two and preserving the no-hitter in the process.

Alli Miller came on in relief in the fourth. She pitched the final two innings and struck out four batters to finish off Unadilla Valley.

While Thornton, Neidig and Miller were busy keeping UV batters off balance, Megan Palmatier was getting it done at the dish.

Palmatier went 2-for-3 and drove in five runs, including three on a second-inning home run to center field.

Palmatier also had a two-run double. Her teammates Ashley Matthews and Samantha Cerasna each finished with a double as well.

B-G (3-0) travels to Delhi on Wednesday.

Gilboa 15, Downsville/Livingston Manor/Roscoe 8

Gilboa starting pitcher Abigail Thompkins got the win in the circle and went 3-for-4 from the plate to lead her team to a season-opening win over Downsville/Livingston Manor/Roscoe on Monday.

Tompkins allowed eight runs but none of them were earned as her defense committed seven errors behind her.

Gilboa also put forth a sloppy defensive effort, committing six errors of its own.

Gilboa scored a run in the first, then drove in three more in the second to take a 4-0 lead.

Downsville/Livingston Manor/Roscoe responded with three runs in the third inning to pull within one.

Gilboa broke it open in the fourth, bringing home five runs to take a six-run lead and pull away for good.

Downsville/Livingston Manor/Roscoe scored five runs in the top of the seventh but it wasn't enough to get the come-from-behind win.

"It was a rough opening game but we haven'e gotten to practice much," Downsville/Livingston Manor/Roscoe head coach Anne Miceli said. "Luckily, now we see what we need to work on and we can address it."

Downsville/Livingston Manor/Roscoe's Gabby Ryan and Lindsey Hefele each finished with a double. Hefele went 2-for-4 at the plate.

Downsville/Livingston Manor/Roscoe (0-1) hosts Walton on Wednesday at 4:15 p.m.

D-H got on the board in the bottom half of the first, scoring three runs and never looking back.

The 10-run rule was in effect after five innings, bringing the game to an end.

"The pitching performance by the Stiles is nothing new," said D-H coach Dan Briggs "This is her 7th or 8th perfect game and 12th overall no hitter."

D-H's Kyra Martin hit a home run and teammates Aubrin Smith, Emma Walker and Stiles all had doubles.

D-H travels to Afton on Wednesday with the first pitch scheduled for 4:30 p.m.

Oneonta held Chenango Forks scoreless in the bottom half of the third and Weeks hit her home run in the top of the fourth to increase Oneonta's lead to 3-0.

The Yellowjackets scored one more in the top of the sixth to get the 4-0 win and earn their first victory of the season.

Oneonta hosts New Hartfordon Wednesday at 4:45 p.m. in a non-league matchup.

HIGH SCHOOL TENNIS

Windham 4, Delhi 3

Delhi's Alex Haight, Miles Philion and Hunter Sanford each won their singles matches but the Bulldogs were swept in doubles and fell to Windham in their season opener on Monday.

Haight defeated Windham's Tenjing Sherpa, 9-4, while Phillion bested Connor Darcy, 9-2, and Sanford defeated Brady Post by the same score.

Windham's Chad Stang took down Delhi's Paul Avilia, 9-5, and his teammate Bethany Klatz defeated the Bulldogs' Danny Rolfe, 9-6.

In the doubles matches, Windham's Liz Martin and Grace Moran beat Brandon Bodo and Andrew Hilton, 9-4, while the Warriors' Sam Kornbrek and Roco Morelli defeated Maggie DeMeo-Meers and Caranne Ingram, 9-1.

Delhi head coach Jen Sanford noted that she was encouraged by her team's play, and that she believes they'll improve when they have a chance to practice outside once the weather clears up.

"No matter how much you practice indoors its not the real thing," coach Sanford said. "Once we can get out and practice on the courts we'll be fine."

Delhi (0-1) hosts B-G on Tuesday at 4:30 p.m.

Chenango Valley 6, Oneonta 1

Oneonta freshman Chris Catan won his singles match (6-0, 6-1) but the Yellowjackets fell to Chenango Valley on Monday in their first match of the 2018 season.

Catan was the only Oneonta competitor to win their match up.

"Chris looked really good today and hit the ball well and we had a few other players play well but not get a win," Oneonta head coach Phyllis Orlowski said."We've been practicing in the middle school gym, at the tennis club and we even got to play on our courts a few times. We've been all over."

Oneonta's Reilly Catan was defeated by Chenango Valley's Jame Wyall, 6-1, 7-5. Teammates Abigail Thorsland and Dylan Pettit also fell in each of their singles matches.

Oneonta (0-1) travels to Susquehanna Valley on Wednesday at 4 p.m.

HIGH SCHOOL BASEBALL

B-G 4, Unadilla Valley 3

Thomas Palmatier pitched a complete game and hit a walk-off single to lead Bainbridge-Guilford to a win at home against Unadilla Valley on Monday.

The game remained scoreless through the first three innings until the Storm scored a run in the top of the fourth to take the lead, 1-0.

UV held that advantage until the bottom of the fifth inning. The Bobcats had a base hit and a stolen base and were able to string together a few more hits to knock in three runs and take a 3-1 lead.

Unadilla Valley scored one run in the sixth and another in the seventh to tie the score at three.

B-G's Trevor Halaquist singled in the bottom of the seventh and Palmatier was able to bring him home later in the inning with a walk-off single to seal the win.

B-G (1-0) travels to Delhi on Wednesday at 4:30 p.m.

Chenango Forks 7, Oneonta 2

Starting pitcher Tom Haskell pitched 6 innings, allowing two hits and two runs to lead Chenango Forks to a win at home over Oneonta on Monday.

Oneonta pitchers John Mikolaicyk, Sean Macinerney, Ryan Packard and Teddy McGraw combined for 12 strikeouts but walked 7 batters and the Yellowjackets defense committed five errors in its first outing of the season.

"It was an unconventional loss," Oneonta head coach Joe Hughes said. "Usually when your pitchers give you 12 strike outs you normally have a chance to win, but today we played like it was our first time on the field."

One bright spot for the Yellowjackets came in the top of the fourth when Mikolaicyk hit a home run to get Oneonta on the board and avoid a shut out.

Oneonta (0-1) travels to Norwich on Thursday with the first pitch scheduled for 4:30 p.m.
