Mary Brantley's equalizing goal with just more than 18 minutes left in regulation forced overtime as Oneonta downed Norwich, 3-1, Tuesday in the Yellowjackets' season opener.

Despite a 19-7 lead in shots and a 12-1 advantage in corners, Oneonta trailed for most of the game after Norwich took the lead after four minutes on a counterattack finished off by Sydney Coggins.

The Yellowjackets finally broke through with 18:42 left on the clock as Brantley took a feed from Hannah Johnson to tie it. A loose ball saw Johnson draw the keeper's attention before sending a quick pass to Brantley for the finish.

"Unfortunately, that's the good and bad of soccer. Time of possession means literally nothing, it's all about how many times you get it over the goal line," Oneonta coach Jerry Mackey said. "They have a couple of great players and a goalie that could keep them in it. It's hard because you know you have to get one and everyone tenses up a little."

An injury to Norwich goalkeeper Haylea Eaton helped Oneonta surge ahead. The Yellowjackets could not capitalize on increased pressure in the remaining moments of regulation, but Johnson scored twice in the first period of overtime to give the hosts the lead for good. Dani Basdekis and Anika Buzzy each produced an assist in overtime.

"It's another unintended consequence of the state lessening the number of practices required to play," Mackey said. "Six practices doesn't leave much time for preparation. At least we got this one out of the way, the deep end of the pool comes Thursday."

Oneonta (1-0) visits reigning state champions and four-time defending section champions Chenango Forks on Thursday at 7 p.m.
