Competiello carries Schenevus to 2-1 win

RYAN AMES | The Daily Star Schenevus’ Angelina Competiello tries to dribble around Cherry Valley-Springfield’s Kendra McGovern during the second half of Tuesday’s game at Schenevus.

SCHENEVUS — Schenevus edged visiting Cherry Valley-Springfield, 2-1, Tuesday, Oct. 1 behind a pair of goals from Angelina Competiello in a battle of undefeated and state-ranked teams.

The Dragons won in come-from-behind fashion as Competiello scored a pair of second-half goals.

Fourth-ranked Schenevus pushed its record to a perfect 11-0, while sixth-ranked Cherry Valley-Springfield (11-1-1, 7-1-1) suffered its first loss of the season.

“It was quite a show,” Dragons coach Paris Matteo said. “We started out a little rough and we didn’t have the first goal, which isn’t usually us.”

The Patriots went ahead 1-0 on a goal from Arianna Bosc at 14:41 of the first half. Bosc raced to a cleared ball in the offensive zone, got behind the Schenevus defenders and scored on a quick shot to the bottom corner.

CV-S controlled possession in the first 40 minutes, forcing the Dragons to defend for much of the period.

Schenevus came out with energy to start the second half and carried it through the period.

“I think whoever had that last goal was going to come in with the adrenaline to finish it,” Matteo said. “So I didn’t mind having them score first, I knew we just had to answer back and get the second one. The adrenaline was going to keep it up after the second goal.”

At 19:06, Competiello registered her first on a high shot to the top right corner. Following a Dragons clear, Competiello got great position on the bouncing ball and sprinted past the Patriots defenders en route to the strike.

Minutes later, Competiello had a grade-A chance in the box but rang the shot off the left post.

With the momentum on its side, Schenevus prevented the Patriots from getting much going on the offensive side of the ball midway through the final frame.

About 10 minutes after her initial goal, Competiello gave the Dragons the lead at 9:36. Similar to her first strike, Competiello corralled the loose ball by bodying around a CV-S player, but this time No. 11 curved a shot to the bottom left corner in what ended up being the game-winning tally.

“(We made) a little adjustment, we put her in the middle,” Matteo said of Competiello’s performance. “I think overall people just got tired on their side and on our side. But I think everyone was a little bit hungry. A lot of posts, everyone started hitting posts, we played different people in different positions.”

Both teams played to an identical 2-1 score a season ago, with the Dragons also pulling out the win. Matteo said another tight game was expected this time around.

“Absolutely, I saw it going 1-1 and I got nervous because the game got pushed to 5 p.m. I’m like it might go to overtime,” Matteo said. “I didn’t expect anything less, they are a great team.”

Shots favored Schenevus, 10-3, while the Patriots finished up, 2-1, in corners.

Dragons goalie Hannah Osborne had two saves and Kelsey Girard had eight saves in net for CV-S (11-1-1).

Schenevus will host Sharon Springs at 4:30 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 3.
