Kristin Ratliff and Samantha Fanion finished fourth and sixth, respectively, to lead Cooperstown’s girls to a fifth-place finish in the Section Three Class D Cross Country Championships on Saturday at Vernon-Verona-Sherrill.

Ratliff completed the 3.1-mile course in 20 minutes, 31.3 seconds. Fanion finished in 20:49.8. Both runners qualified for the state meet, which will be held at 9 a.m. Saturday at SUNY Canton.

Also heading to states is the winner of the Class D race, Hamilton’s Sage Hurta, who crossed in 19:17.7.

Tully won the team title with 52 points, 19 better than runner-up Beaver River. Sauquoit Valley and South Lewis finished with 114 and 115, respectively, followed by Cooperstown with 148. There were 18 complete teams.

Kate O’Handley and Margie Knight placed 39th and 41st for Cooperstown. O’Handley finished in 22:50.5. Knight’s time was 22:51.2.

Cooperstown’s boys placed 10th out of 20 teams. They had 291 points in a race won by Beaver River with 50.

Scott Curtis paced Cooperstown with a 29th-place finish (18:55.2). Teammates Daniel Francis and Joachim Landry earned respective 43rd- and 49th-place finishes. Francis crossed in 19:23.8, about 13 seconds faster than Landry.

Sauquoit Valley’s Cole Blocher won in 17:23.2.
