Franklin sophomore Kayla Campbell reaches 1,000 points in win over Laurens

JARED BOMBA | The Daily Star Franklin’s Kayla Campbell watches her foul shot hang on the rim before falling through to give her 1,000 varsity points during the first quarter of a Tri-Valley League game Friday, Jan. 10, at Franklin.

FRANKLIN — Franklin sophomore Kayla Campbell became the seventh member of the school’s 1,000-point club in a 56-13 Tri-Valley League win over visiting Laurens on Friday, Jan. 10.

“It’s fitting. She is a player that has really put the time in to develop her game, and reaching 1,000 points as quickly as she has is really a testament to all the hard work she has put in,” Franklin coach Mike Dutcher said.

The Purple Devils’ guard, who is midway through a third year playing varsity basketball, entered the game needing 10 points to reach quadruple digits, and scored the first nine points of the game in 98 seconds.

While those first nine came as easily as the first 990 appeared to for Campbell, 1,000 proved elusive as a pair of rim-outs and a few tough defensive plays from Laurens kept Campbell off the board until less than two minutes remained in the quarter.

The first of two foul shots hung on the rim in front of a near-capacity crowd before dropping through to loud cheers and a smile from Campbell.

“She hit those first nine so quick and then going to the line, there was that whole row of photographers under the basket focused on her,” Dutcher said. “But that’s the kind of player she is, so composed at all times. I knew she would put that right in.”

After a brief pause in the action, and a swish on the second foul shot, the Purple Devils exited the first quarter ahead, 21-4, and used a 13-0 run in the second quarter for a 34-4 edge at halftime.

Campbell finished with a game-high 22 points on eight field goals and a 4-for-6 performance at the foul line. She also had six rebounds and six steals while hitting two of Franklin’s five 3-pointers.

Marissa Campbell joined her sister in double digits, knocking down the Purple Devils’ three other triples and totaling 11 points with six assists. Alyssa Nowhitney totaled 10 points and six rebounds.

Gabby Andrades paced Laurens with five points, including one 3-pointer.

Franklin (7-1, 5-0) will visit Cherry Valley-Springfield on Tuesday, Jan. 14, in a contest between two contenders in a competitive TVL.
